to Jade

to j: i wanted to put this in the tag board, but it was too long hehe. sigh.

yeah, so do i. nice backdrop i gotta say. haha. sutong is so good. i like the feeling of immersing myself in other people's stories, especially with some distance from where and when i am living. it's different. for the katharsis of the characters' emotions? haha. thx to a friend who taught me this aristotle term. and it helps if the author goes into really great details about that life. goes really deep to describe the subtle emotions and thoughts. yeah, this is why stories by writers like sutong, yuhua, zhang ailing, also v woolf, wilde, or andersen stir me so. they have the heart to feel it and the genius to pen it down. making the experience more absolute than the real one. :D this is going to blow the tag board. but what's new hehe.

anothing about sutong, my mom used to tell me that the era that he likes to write about was one that her grandparents lived in. that made me even more interested in reading that stuff. guess just a relate and fulfill curiosity thing,

accomplished poets and novelists did seem to really understand life better, life as it is, and they purge it of trappings and present us pure and stunning stuff..for sutong, i am always mesmerized and very much addicted to the one-of-a-kind feel of his work, the language, texture, the stories, the characters, the era and history. he is one of the few contemporary authors i've come across that really exudes a genuine, extraordinarily strong sense of chineseness, cultured yet wild, reflective yet not selfconscious, and these appeal to me most strongly. writers like him are rare to come by nowadays...(but on the other hand, i am not reading new contemporary chinese writers terribly often.. :P)

YEAH! this is what work together to give the reader an almost theatrical feeling about the particular settings and stories, yet having some space of abstraction left for imagination. alas! you're so right.

说到‘隔’与‘不隔’的问题,真是一语惊醒梦中人。又想:其实也是匹配的问题。可能读者与作者个性合不合决定了两者之间能否沟通。我从小读书就挑文风,有些文人,再出名,就是读不顺,(有‘隔’的感觉?哈哈)。大约是性情不相仿,无法共鸣吧。
